Part III of Living the Fabulous Life in Your 2nd Home
Making it Manageable
Keep your second home simple. Too much stuff and too much aggravation can cause you to just stay home. On every decision, think hassle free. For example, suppose the grandchildren are going to be a big part of this home. Consider kid friendly upholstery, barstools and kitchen chairs. Noone wants to worry about spills while vacationing. I help clients make decisions for 2nd homes based on the spaghetti test. Everyone makes a pot of spaghetti while on vacation. Everyone also wants to feel comfortable enough to eat that plate of spaghetti from anywhere in the house. Inevitably, it will spill! Will your furnishings hold up to the spaghetti test?
Durable fibers are the best option. Consider indoor/outdoor fabrics for your upholstery and window treatments. There are a plethora of good performance fabrics on the market now. So good, in fact, that you cannot even tell they are indoor/outdoor. Indoor/Outdoor rugs are affordable and easy to care for. When soiled or stained, you can simply take them outside and hose them off. Leathers and pleathers are great options and now come in a variety of textures. A word of caution about using this type of product if you have pets who will be residing here. Little toenails can puncture leather and pleather so be really careful with your selections if this is a factor in your vacation living.
Slipcovers can be your best friend! Slipcovers have come a long way baby! They can be tailored so that they don’t look slouchy and the fabric range is fabulous. Indoor/outdoor fabrics make up beautifully for slipcovers and are definitely spaghetti stain resistant. If the home is on the rental market, slipcovers make loads of sense. You can purchase really good frames and then, change out the slipcovers or launder for the next season. I often advise clients to have their “own set” of slipcovers for their own use if their 2nd home is going to be on the rental program.
