There is nothing that can start a day out right than gorgeous blue skies! I remember, as a child, that I would lie on my back in the yard for hours looking up at the blue sky, trying to determine what characters I could find in the playful white clouds…. an evil pirate, a scary bear, or a smiling Mickey Mouse. Anything could be imagined in that lovely backdrop!
Although blue skies are the most perfect shade of color imaginable, blue, in general, is not always the easiest color in the rainbow to decorate with. In fact, as many of my interior design clients have discovered, blue can be downright difficult! There are so many options available that qualify as “blue”, including those with heavy doses of gray and green. Depending upon the light in your space, and the furniture and accessories you plan to use, the blue you select for your decor should be chosen carefully, since this color can quickly become overwhelming, and as my friend, Susan, has said…. “just too blue”. Here are a few examples of some guidelines to remember when decorating with shades of blue. (Photos from House Beautiful.)
Combined with WOOD, blues tend to appear warmer.
Combined with SILVER, blues are cooler.
With WHITE, blues are brighter.
Blues work well with NEUTRALS and can actually be quite glamorous!

I love the elegant statement that these blue accents make against the dramatic, yet neutral, wallpaper.

This room, by Tobi Fairly, has the perfect blend of blue against the tufted, beige backdrop. Absolute glamour!
Blue can certainly be a challenging design color, but as you can see from the photos in this post, when it is correctly blended, it can produce a multitude of versatile results. We may never be able to reproduce the perfection of blue skies, but blue can certainly work as a FABULOUS staple color in almost any decor style!
