Would you paint the floor in your home? What is the most daring design risk you have ever taken? My series for Jules’ Jewels, Livin’ on the Edge will dive into how I help to spot edgy trends and help incorporate them into southern design at Knotting Hill Interiors! I hope you are as excited as I am to share a design element that I am absolutely in love with, Geometric Floors!
Dramatic entrance down a winding staircase? Yes, please!
I am obsessed with them and our design team at Knotting Hill is looking for just the right client who is ready to create an amazing statement in their home! Is it you?
I think they are edgy because they are daring! Not many people have the guts to pull the trigger.
They are bold and not for the faint of heart. I have been begging my “conservative, navy blue pin stripe suit wearing husband” to let me do it in our new house. I have been trying to convince him for a while now. I have argued a pretty good case. And here’s a secret… I think I am winning!
I love the stark contrast of a black and white geometric floor. Painted floors don’t obviously have to be black and white but, in my dreams at night they are! ALWAYS!
They are an instant wow. When you walk into the room, painted floors immediately take center stage.
I am really digging how this room creates a traditional and soft feeling while still being able to incorporate a fantastic painted floor.
There are also some amazing rugs with to-die-for geometric patterns that can really still set a room apart, in case painting those hard wood floors is not something you are quite ready for yet! But, when you are, get ready because you are most definitely “Livin’ on the Edge!”
Julie is part of the Knotting Hill Design Team, a lover of Pinterest, Greek Key and finding unique ways to help her clients create a unique personal expression of who they are through design. She is a regular blogger for It’s So Fabulous on her series, Jules’ Jewels.

that dining room shot has been one of my favorite rooms for years;it inspired my own dining room! i’ve never been able to discover the original designer…. do y’all know who it is??
ps, yes, i *love* geometric floors and painted floors of all kinds!
“Family Night” in my home is a Grigg Tradition. With all of us running in different directions all the time, getting together for some quality time is extremely important to me as a mom! We love to create fun themes around our dinners like Mexican Night or Italian Night, but there are two rules that everyone must follow. #1 – All must participate! Everyone has to lend a helping hand in making a dish or cleaning up. No excuses! #2 – Mom (me!) sets the table and the whole crew knows how much I love to set a beautiful table.
My kitchen table just about every day of the week.
Now, you may be thinking, “Interior designer “mom” setting the table is probably way over the top and more than I could ever do.” Well, I am here to tell you one of my fabulous secrets of southern design… lean in close… closer… The easier I can make it, the better (shhh!!). I have about enough time to run in the yard and grab a few branches as any working mom out there! But, I will say one thing – setting a beautiful table for my family is really important to me, so while the kids are fixing the taco bar, I get to create my tablescape.
So, I shared one secret already. Sometimes I go into the yard and grab some branches, leaves, whatever is blooming, etc. You would be surprised when you can create from a couple of well placed twigs! And, if I have extra time, you can get amazing flowers right at your local grocery store!
Family Night! Roses from the grocery store cut short and put in small vases; simple white plates with decorative napkins and a runner. So easy!
You might be thinking to yourself, “I don’t want to pull my good china out for every family meal and my everyday whites won’t bring enough life to my table!.” Well, I have another secret for you. I use paper plates! Yes! Paper plates. Again, you can find some really pretty paper plates right at the store – and they always have seasonal designs!
Can you believe it’s Dixie? Believe it!
If you have some extra time to spare and a few extra dollars, I found this beautiful website, Ferris Wheels and Carousels, with designer paper plates in the most gorgeous patterns. I am wondering if I can get fabric in some of these! What a great idea to get all of your shopping done and once and stock up for family dinners, birthdays, tea parties with your girl friends and that bridal shower you agreed to host!
Are these peacock plates not absolutely fabulous?
A gorgeous floral set for spring! Perfect for Mother’s Day!
On Sundays and especially on special occasions, I really enjoy setting my table with china. One thing I never skimp on is cloth napkins. I insist. Nothing screams elegance like cloth napkins and they are so easy.
At my dinner table, only cloth napkins will do.
My amazing Easter table! I so look forward to creating this each year!
Do you love “setting the table” and creating a beautiful dining experience for your friends and family as much as I do? I would love to see your favorite table settings or hear your own secrets to how you save time and stay fabulous.
Well, I should say “behind” behind the scenes! You never know what will happen when you combine overload of information, little sleep, good friends and a couple of bloody mary’s! Luckily for us, I captured it all on camera!
Cheers! I don’t think this is how we started the day, but it is really all a blur now!
My new rug crush!
Should she or shouldn’t she? Should Julie get these for her new house?
Ok, so we may have worked really hard, but the food was amazing!
The end of the day is near! (Can you tell??)
I would say they are wiped! Couldn’t have anything to do with me, now could it?
Now, THIS is my design team that I know and love!
We just had the best time this year at Market. It has really shown me what amazing synchronicity and alignment my design team has. We know how to come together and work and we certainly know how to come together to play and have fun! And, when you got both of those down, it is like a party all the time! (well, most of the time!). Mark, Julie and Bonnie – or should I say Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil and See No Evil (fitting!!), you are the absolute best team I could ever dream of working with! Thank you all for a fabulous time at Market! Now, we are REALLY ready to get back to Knotting Hill Interiors and get our FABULOUS ON!
The Knotting Hill Interiors Design Team headed to the High Point Market yesterday for the first of several long yet incredibly inspiring days to shop, learn, scout and I am sure create some amazing memories together!
Jet-setting and Interior Designing. I can certainly get used to this! Myself, Bonnie, Julie and Mark!
I often hear the following from clients and friends, “Oh it must be so much fun! It must be so cool to go to market. I would just love to be a fly on the wall and just experience it all.” Well let me just tell you, this is work ya’ll! Yes it looks glamorous but here is how it really goes.
Julie and I looking so pretty together at 10,000 feet! Don’t let these glamorous pictures fool you! Our work is about to begin!
Why, Mark! You look dashing!
You start out at 7:00 a.m…..we are flying and leaving at 7:30 so it is an early start. We arrive 50 minute later and put your roller skates on. There are 5 of us going and we will divide and conquer. This is intense. I have multiple clients to shop for, a store to stock and I have a new project on the horizon that is quite large and I need to scout new lines to accommodate. It looks super easy because we are all dressed to the nines. It is anything but.
Let the games begin!
And… we are there! Without skipping a beat! We fell in love with this pastel marbleized paper and found the colors completely inspiring!
How fabulous! Staff member Chris arrives and we are color coordinated!
Great use of Pantone’s color of the year, Emerald Green!
Love this upholstered square wall! It is fab as an accent wall or even a headboard!
Julie went crazy! A Greek Key lamp!
Great colors here, citron mixed with blues!
I cannot even believe I have the energy to type this blog! But, I really wanted you all to get a little taste of Market! I hope ya’ll are as excited as we are to bring back some amazing new lines and fabulous finds! We are also returning with four very energized and inspired designers ready to get to work!
A quick tip to bring instant “fab” into your home and a simple secret amongst myself and my Southern girlfriends is to always, and I mean always make sure your home smells amazing. Recently, I helped host the Annual Tour of Homes fundraiser for the local museum and we showcased my newly remodeled home. I chose to light up everyone’s sense of smell by burning my favorite scented candle, “White Ginger Lily” by Aquiesse.
It is truly heaven and I am not lying when I said we literally ran out of those candles on the day of the event at our “Champagne After Party” at the store. Anyone who has been at my home that day were coming into the store looking for that candle! It made such an impression!
When someone walks into your home you create an immediate relationship with each of their senses. To be conscious of design does not only mean aware of what people will see visually.
So, here is the thing. Candles can be costly! At $48.99 a pop my favorite candle only makes an appearance during very special occasions or when I really need a reminder of the finer things in life! What do I do the rest of the time. It’s no secret!
And, I am NEVER caught empty handed without refills! You immediately create a connection with your friends, family, dinner guests – even your kids! My kids will comment on the new fragrances I try from season to season and they are great judges to let you know when something is just “not quite right.” And, these are so easy! You can pick them up right at the grocery store! Save your candles for special and get those Glade Plugins out for your everyday. It is a welcoming feeling to walk into your home and have it always smelling fabulous.
