Fabulously Southern in Charleston, Darling!

Charleston Symphony Orchestra invites Kimberly Grigg of Knotting Hill Interiors to present on Southern Design

Tradition with a twist! Charleston elegance at its finest. One of my designs in this historical city.

Anyone up for a day trip to Charleston on April 18th? We’ll do lunch, shopping, a little sightseeing and swing by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s 36th Annual Designer Showcase to hear me present on the “Secrets of Southern Design”?  Charleston is the quintessential place for getting a soul-full of Southern Design (and the most inspiring city below the mason dixon!).  I could get lost in the French Quarter, set up shop on Rainbow Row, but the point of no return is shopping on King Street!

During my talk , I will give insights and tips for southern style interiors, how to choose color palettes for rooms, walls and fabrics; infusing traditional styling with modern conveniences, and creating space with livable luxury for entertaining friends and family.  It is one of the first of many speaking engagements I will present on the Secrets of Southern Design, which is also the title of my upcoming book!

For full details on the event visit the 2013 Symphony Designer Showhouse.

A Charleston Home designed by Knotting Hill Interiors

Sophisticated class is the only way to go in Charleston! This bedroom is most definitely Fabulously Southern! Design: Knotting Hill Interiors

It has been such a treat to see this event being picked up by several publications in the Charleston area!  I guess they are ready for this Knotting Hill girl to come on down and learn about simple yet elegant (and definitely southern!) interior design and lifestyle ideas that easily be applied in their own home.

For more articles and press on the the “Secrets of Southern Design” - Moultrie News, The Post & Courier, Charleston Currents, Charleston City Paper.

Remember! Our field trip is next Thursday, April 18th!  Come and get Fabulously Southern with us!

I have so enjoyed looking at your beautiful website and reading about your company and store….I was just in MB last week looking for fabric but obviously did not do my homework to find your store….so disappointed. I’m buying a fixer-upper in Mt. Pleasant and am scouting out fabrics to use for uphostery and window treatments….fabric stores are like therapy sessions for me! Lots of fun! Can’t wait to experience yours! We love to shop in Myrtle Beach..

    See you on pinterest!

      Dear Pamela,
Thank you so much for your kind comment! Yes, please do come into the story the next time you are in the area. We have an amazing selection of fabrics on hand at the store, an amazing “Master of Fabrics” to assist you and of course I am excited to meet you! I would love to talk with you about your “fixer-upper”! Sounds so fab and fun! And, I totally agree! Fabric stores are like therapy and I have heard that more than once in Knotting Hill! See you soon! xoxo ~ Kimberly

Meet Julie. Meet Her Mistress. Pinterest.

Guest blogger debuts on It's So Fabulous

Meet Julie.  Aside from despising getting her photo made, she is absolutely lovely in every other way (including in this picture taken by the Knotting Hill Interiors official photographer for homes AND staff, Carl Kerridge.)  Julie is the hippest, trendiest lady I know. When our clients work with Julie to help them design their homes, by the end of the project, they want Julie to help design their lives! She is a true artist .

I am so excited that Julie is going to be blogging for “It’s So Fabulous” every other week sharing her tips on how to inspire a fabulous lifestyle.  Here is a little Q&A I did with her during her photo shoot.

Kimberly -How long have you been an interior designer?

Julie – I have been with Knotting Hill for 7 years! Wow, Kimberly! Can you believe it has been that long?

Kimberly – Time sure flies when you are having fun!

Julie – It sure does! So, lets see, I was designing for about three years before I came here to work with you – so ten years!

Kimberly – When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

Julie – This is actually a really funny story.  So,  when I was little I really wanted one of those Barbie Dream Houses.  Well, my mom would never by me one because she thought I would outgrow it after a few months. I had to be creative and I made my own Barbie Dream House.  I would cut pictures out of magazines and create art for the walls, I made little bedspreads out of washcloths, curtains and  pillows out of scrap pieces of fabric. I played with that Barbie Dream House for years and it really helped me to tap into my own creativity.

Kimberly – That IS a great story!  Did your parents think you were born to be a designer after that?

Julie – I think they always knew I was going to do something creative.  I loved to draw, paint and color. Oh Lord did I love to color.  If it wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t good enough for me.  I remember years after the “Barbie Dream House” days, my mom told me that she had felt bad about something for years and years and she wanted to apologize.  She wanted to say she was sorry for not buying my that Barbie Dream House!  I had to laugh.  I would thank my Mom now, because that is one of the earliest memories I have of actually tapping into my creativity. So, thanks Mom!

Kimberly – Where are you from?

Julie – I am from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Born and raised!

Kimberly – A true G.R.I.T.S.!

Julie – Yes, ma’am! Girls Raised in the South and proud of it!

Luxury Interior Designer from the South

Kimberly – What do you think your home says about your personality?

Julie - I am in the middle of building a new home right now, so it is empty! (laughs) That is a tough question!  I have an appreciation for so many styles and don’t think I could categorize myself or my home into just one style or one particular taste.  My true hope is that when someone walks into my home, they  will really see that it is a reflection of my personality. So much so, that they recognize that it is a such a perfect fit for me, that it is cool, but they may not necessarily want it in their own home.

Kimberly – I see that in all of the homes you design for your clients, Julie.  They are always unique, different and a true mark of their personality.  But, if you DID have to describe your style in one word, what would it be?

Julie – Sophisticated.  I would definitely say that my style is flexible, but a definite must is elements of sophistication and class.  So, that is two words.

Kimberly – And, I totally agree! Two fabulous words that describe your style.   Who are your design inspirations?

Julie – I just love Mary McDonald.  I have been a huge fan of her for years.

Kimberly – Me, too!

Julie – And, of course YOU Kimberly!

Kimberly – Awww, thank you Julie.  So, I have one last question.  I know this because I work side by side with you everyday -but there are two things you are totally obsessed with.  The first is Greek Key…

Julie - I LOVE all things geometric, but I especially do love Greek Key.  I am especially obsessed right now with geometric floors.  What is the second?  Now I am curious!

South Carolina Interior Designer loves Geometrics and Greek Key

Ahhh! A piece of blue and white china with Greek Key around the top of the cup. It’s meant to be.

Kimberly – That you can’t wait to put your little girl to bed each night so you can stalk Pinterest!

Julie – Ok, you got me! YES! I am obsessed with Pinterest.  My husband calls Pinterest my girlfriend, so I guess you could call Pinterest my mistress! It is really inspiring to see all of the other professional designers that are using Pinterest and it is so easy to connect with their amazing ideas and designs, keep up with trends, and get super creative with my clients.  And, I am designing a brand new home right now, so my pinning addiction has been very helpful with that!

Kimberly – I can’t wait for your new blog series on It’s So Fabulous!

Julie – I am so excited as well!  I will feature the latest trends and ways to make design personal, a signature of who you are and what your life is about.  I am sure we will touch on Greek Key as well. :)

Kimberly – Thanks so much for talking with me!

Julie – I had a fabulous time!

Live Inspired and Stay Fabulous!

Love,

Kimberly xoxo

Inspiring a Fabulous Life - On My Blog!

South Carolina Luxury Interior Designer Blog and Design

Don’t just be among one of the best dressed homes in town – look your best, feel your best and be your best! Be fabulous!

As with any good design, every now and then it needs a bit of freshening up – whether it is a fresh coat of paint, some new throw pillows or maybe just a beautiful potted orchid to bring the room some new life. Well, for the last several months I have been looking at my blog from all sorts of different angles – except the angle of a designer!  Once I put my designing “hat” on and stepped back to see what wasn’t “just right” with it, I immediately recognized that my blog is not that different from designing a room!  The blog needed a vision and that vision is not that much different from what we do right now – we just needed to move some things around a bit.

I will be bringing you fresh new ideas and ways to “inspire a fabulous lifestyle” since you all know that truly living beautifully and fabulously is my passion in life.  Sound good yet?

Design and Blog of Luxury South Carolina Interior Desiger

On Wednesdays we will be “Creating Fabulous.” You will be hearing from my team members at Knotting Hill Interiors about our amazing products and services along with wonderful ideas for things you can do right in your own home!

I am especially excited about Fridays.  Since the blog was born, Fridays have always been reserved for T.G.I.F. – Thank Goodness it’s So Fabulous.  While we are definitely not getting any less fabulous, I have been really wanting to bring you more tips, ideas and how-to’s from me and how it all ties in with southern design.  So, that is why Fridays will now be called – “Fabulously Southern”!

We will have some special features, more videos and as you can already see – more blogs!  Many of your have requested more easy and quick tips and inspirations as I know that there are not enough hours in the days for any of us!  We love to hear special requests from you, so now is the time!  We are sketching out an exciting blog calendar for the next few months and if there is something you would like to see me write about or share, please let me know!

Drab to Fab with Potted Orchids!

There is nothing like having fresh flowers in your home, and with spring exploding everywhere I look outside, I simply have to find creative ways to bring all of that amazing freshness inside my home.  The problem I sometimes run into is that the smell of fresh flowers at times can have an adverse affect on me.  Have you ever run into that problem?  I promised myself I would not resign to only having fake flower arrangements in my home.  To truly inspire a fabulous lifestyle, I am determined to find a creative solution to everything!  My answer: Potted Orchids.  Orchids are just about the most beautiful (and most fabulous flower) I have ever seen.  They come in all different colors, they last for eight to ten weeks and no matter where you live, they are relatively easy to find!  Check out my video on Knotting Hill TV all about orchids and some of my fantastic yet simple ways of arranging them to bring an element of style and sophistication to any room.

As I mentioned in the video, that while potted orchids can last for eight to ten weeks, if you have a green thumb (which I admittedly struggle a little bit with this!) you can actually care for your orchids so they bloom again and again.  No fear!  I have found an amazing resource to help you learn all you ever wanted to know about orchids, different types, how to care for them and more!  Everything Orchids makes growing and caring for your orchids easy.

If you need some inspiration on different ways to display your orchids, I located some fabulous images on Pinterest to wake up a little more than your green thumb!

Here is an absolutely simple but lovely way to brighten up a wide window ledge with your potted orchids. I love how there is detail to scale with some of the orchids on books to give them height and a few smooth stones. Very Zen!

How precious are these baby orchids! Since orchids have no smell, they would be absolutely perfect for a nursery or a bright addition to your work space!

The biggest pop of color in this room are these sassy hot pink potted orchids! I love the grandeur of this particular plant as well. It compliments the floor to ceiling book shelves.

South Carolina Interior Designer Celebrates Easter with Style

I just love a holiday and Easter is such a special one! Not only are we celebrating renewal, Easter symbolizes Spring, my favorite time of the year. As a designer, I like to decorate seasonally. And as a Southerner, I just love tradition! Setting the tone at the front door is a big thing for me. How bout my very large boxwood bunnies! I love these guys and my neighbors tell me they look forward to seeing them come out each year…it’s a sign of Spring for them, too!

Easter starts at my front door with my giant bunnies Pete and Pat!

I typically sprinkle in a few seasonal decorations throughout my home.  Notice the bunny and egg trees on my kitchen counter.  This arrangement is a perfect backdrop to start our Easter brunch with champagne mimosa’s.

My foyer table with Easter Cards (notice how I am also showing off how fabulous my blue and white pottery looks with my Easter decor!)

Easter at our house is traditional.  We start our morning preparing for church.    Today, like most Easter mornings, is a bit of a scramble.  Everyone is scurrying.  There is a lot of hair to fix, outfits to pull together, belts to find and on and on it goes!  WE made it though and with a few minutes to spare.  Roger doesn’t like to be late, especially for church!

Of course, Holden, our youngest, lost one of his shoes this morning so we had to adjust. Seems like something like this happens every year! Can you relate??

Now we are ready for church.

After church, festivities begin with Spring gifts from the Easter Bunny!  Our Easter bunny brings us new beach bags each year  instead of baskets.  They are usually  filled with new Spring clothes rather than candy.

Rather than traditional Easter baskets, our Easter Bunny brings the kids beach bags stuffed with new items for spring instead of candy!

Then there is Easter brunch.  Check out my Easter table.  I actually used things I have had for years and added in a few jars of tulips and I think it looks pretty!  My color scheme is blue, coral and lime green.  My fabulous blue and white Motaheddah china is a staple.  It feels very Easter-y when paired with my lime green glassware and a combination of lime green napkins mixed with coral napkins.  Notice the rick rack trim on the napkins.  So cute!
I also just lined the center of the table with the coordinating rick rack placemats (which are reversible) to add a pop of color to my white linen table cloth.

Easter Brunch goes something like this:

Peach glazed Ham
Blue Cheese Deviled Eggs
Pear Salad
Copper Penny Carrots
Corn  and Sweet Pea Relish
Pineapple Casserole
Roasted Potatoes
Biscuits
Carrot Cake

Following brunch it’s outside for the giant Grigg  Easter Egg hunt!  Three golden prize eggs this year.  Our standard poodle, Gatsby, found the first egg!  We forgot about the eggs being hidden and peeked out the window only to see Gatsby munching down on some licorice sticks!  Thank goodness he didn’t find the chocolate!

Love.

I had an amazing day with my family.  I am so thankful to be able to celebrate each and every day with them.  They make want to be a better person each day.  And, while “Mom” is usually the Easter Bunnies helper, stuffing all the baskets (and doing some of the shopping…) the big guy and my wonderful family did not forget about me this year!

Holden’s shoes. No wonder things get lost around here. The maid took this picture right before she picked them up and put them away. ;)

I hope all of you had an amazing holiday and are ready to ring in the spring, fresh flowers, white shoes, chocolate for special occasions and making memories with your family.

Now go have an It’s So Fabulous Day everyone!!!!!
