I recently realized that that I do something as a designer that I was totally unaware of until a pattern emerged. When I am trying to decide a color scheme from scratch, I am careful to consider how the homeowner (especially the lady of the house!) is going to look in it. Many designers say that you should just head to your closet and choose what colors you normally wear…. But I tend to disagree. Have you ever noticed how few cute and snazzy dressers there are out there? Most people haven’t been color-coded to to decide what looks best on them. They are just naturally drawn to certain colors. However, this does NOT mean they look good in them!

I say, “Let’s try something else!” Often, I look deep into my client’s face and start to build a color scheme around the color of her eyes. Now, let me clarify…. If both husband and wife are very involved in the project, then I go a different route. However, I generally work more with the woman of the house, in which case, her eyes are truly the windows of her soul. Eyes are very beautiful and are a great impetus for a color scheme.  First, they usually contain many more colors that just one, and by nature, they are already analogous. They are already suited to the person and her coloring, so I know building a color scheme in this interesting way will achieve the goal of making this client look great in her new surroundings!
